PetersenDean Roofing and Solar Systems Donates to Tri-City Food Bank Encourages Others to Give What They Can
Newark, CA
| PetersenDean Roofing and Solar Systems donates cash to the Tri-city Volunteers Food Bank in Fremont for Thanksgiving meals.
Says Jim Petersen, CEO and founder, "I only wish we could give more but are proud to participate at any level and we encourage others to give
what they can because every little bit helps." |
| Statistics show that approximately 65% of those who turn to food banks are working class families who struggle to keep a roof over
their heads as well as provide food for their families. "Theirs are not the faces you expect to see in a food bank line," says Melissa Ponchard,
Executive Director of the Tri-City Volunteers Food Bank and Thrift Store and while she does not like it, she is "not worried if the line for
food donations has increased as long as the line for the homeless does not grow." A tough reality for anyone who runs a food bank with a daily
responsibility to manage the resources required to feed thousands of people. Despite the challenges, is it clearly a career upon which Melissa thrives. |
 |
PetersenDean, a local Newark company, usually donates a ton of turkeys at Thanksgiving to a local food bank but with the rising cost of most foods,
it became clear that Tri-City Food Bank could serve more people if they used their own resources to obtain the kinds of foods their community
consumes. After a thorough examination of her increasingly diverse community, Ms. Ponchard knows foods like rice, beans, potatoes, lentils and
chicken make more sense for families and go further than one turkey, "there are some who are not familiar with traditional American Thanksgiving
staples but would still like to serve a wholesome, culturally appropriate, meal as they give thanks." Food banks nationwide have made the tough
decision to move away from traditional Thanksgiving fare as the number of those needing supplemental food support population diversity increases.
If you want to help out especially during this holiday season, all you have to do is stop at Tri-City Volunteers Food Bank at 37350 Joseph Street,
Fremont, CA to make your tax free financial or food donation.
What your cash donation buys: According to an article released Wednesday by MSN Money staff, a $1 donation to a local food bank provides
about five to 15 pounds of food products because of their ability to buy in bulk, staff with volunteers and through their connections in the
community who notify them of specials and where to get deep discounts.
What foods do food banks need: fruit and vegetables and canned goods for food boxes such as canned fruit and vegetables, canned meats and
fish, peanut butter, pasta, beans, rice, canned soup, low sugar cereal and oatmeal, canned tomatoes, tomato sauce and powdered milk., jalapenos,
corn flower, lentils and spices such as cumin, garlic and ginger.

About Viola Blythe Community Service Center of Newark: Viola Freeman was born in McComb, Oklahoma on Sept. 28, 1916, the ninth of ten children and orphaned at the age of four.
She married Stanley Blythe in 1946 and moved to Newark the same year. They lived in a small house across from what is now the Viola Blythe Center.
The Newark woman helped those in need for more than 50 years -- first out of the garage of her Newark home, and later, the City of Newark offered Viola a building at Ash Street Park from which to operate.
At that point, the Viola Blythe Community Service Center of Newark was born. With the help from the City, churches, schools, businesses, individuals and volunteers, the non-profit Center today provides emergency services to approximately 10,600 people each year.
This includes Thanksgiving and Christmas programs and a Children's Christmas party for approximately 350 children. The kids each receive a new toy, a visit with Santa, entertainment and refreshments.
Viola's daughter, Debbie Caravalho, who is lovingly carrying on the tradition started by her mother, currently runs the center.

Newark Based PetersenDean Hosts First Annual Solar Power Day
Newark, California – Tuesday, November 9, 2010

Jim Petersen - President/CEO Solar Day Guests and Vendors
The First Annual Solar Power Day at the local company headquarters of PetersenDean, Inc. was appropriately ushered in by brilliant sunshine. The event is the first of many to promote home builder education and awareness in solar energy, sustainable practices and materials, and to understand how they can be premier providers of clean energy new homes with little or no monthly energy costs through the use of solar energy.
“This event is for you, the home builder, to see what is going on in our industry,” says the CEO of PetersenDean, Jim Petersen, “it is your chance to meet with our solar partners and ask questions, get information, and start thinking about how you can lead the way into the future of home building with pre-installed energy solutions like solar power”
Leasing solar has become increasingly popular and PetersenDean’s partnership with SunRun, the nation’s leading home solar power service company, makes a solar solution readily available to home builders. “It was good to talk to all of the vendors and learn about what we can offer our new homebuyers in regards to a solar lease plan” said Dave Kay, Director of Architectural Design at Shea Homes.
“We want to drive solar power system costs way down so that it is affordable to every home builder to offer to home buyers” says Jim Petersen, “and making the information available to home builders is the first step.”
Among the 200+ guests was the Mayor of Newark, Dave Smith, local dignitaries from the Newark Chamber of Commerce and CEO’s from home builders such as Shea Homes, KB Home, DR Horton, Summerhill, Shapell, Braddock and Logan, Citation Homes and Pulte. Vendor partners from the solar power industry included Kyocera Solar, Eagle Roofing and Solar, BP Solar, PVPowered, Fronius USA, Schneider Electric, Locus Electric, Schüco and SunRun. That suits Jim Petersen to a tee because, in his words, “these events should feel like a Farmer’s Market where home builders can get the newest, freshest ideas in sustainable, alternative energy available in the industry.”

Attorney General Jerry Brown visits PetersenDean in Newark, CA
Newark, CA September 23, 2010
California Attorney General and democratic gubernatorial candidate Jerry Brown talked with CEO Jim Petersen of PetersenDean the largest privately owned roofing and solar company in the nation, toured the warehouse and greeted employees. Democratic gubernatorial candidate Jerry Brown held a news conference to discuss his opposition of California's Prop 23.
In the past two years, the company has created an average of ten new jobs every month, largely because of strong environmental policies, which have increased the popularity and affordability of solar power systems. In total, the company employs more than 1,900 workers in California, including a former NUMMI employee, and has partnered with local community colleges to train and employ students interested in green technology. Last year, the company was named America’s roofer of the year.
“My company is a prime example that California’s commitment to fighting global warming can create jobs and grow our economy,” said PetersenDean CEO Jim Petersen. “If PetersenDean and the solar industry are going to thrive in California, we need leaders who are committed to moving the state forward, not those who stand in the way of progress.”

Solar included in new Yorba Linda luxury homes
BY KRISTINE GUERRA July 27, 2010 YORBA LINDA
Luxury homes with solar panels that could save homeowners $50 to $100 in monthly electricity bills are being built in Yorba Linda.
Toll Brothers Inc., in partnership with SunRun Inc. and PetersenDean, is in the early stages of building the homes in Vista del Verde's The Preserve, a community of 90 houses priced from the upper $600,000s. This is the first time Toll Brothers, which builds projects nationwide, has included solar technology in its newhomes.
Instead of placing the solar panels on top of the roofs, they will be installed among roofing tiles of each new home for aesthetic purposes, Toll Brothers Project Manager Isaac Boyd said. Each solar module, made of 14 silicon solar cells, will replace approximately four roofing tiles, which they resemble.
"We do think this is an exciting new feature and a way to the future," Toll Brothers Regional President Jim Boyd said. "It really does offer the buyer an opportunity to save money and also support the green initiative in California."

Sarah Leech, solar project manager for PetersenDean, said more home builders the company works with are including integrated solar panels because of the aesthetic potential, but builders are also starting to see the benefits of rack-mounted panels, which have higher efficiency and higher rebates for homeowners.
SunRun, a San Francisco-based solar energy company that bought the solar panels going into The Preserve, will lease them to homeowners for $42 a month over a 20-year-period, totaling $10,080. Jim Boyd said home buyers won't have to pay for the panels to be installed.
The cost of installing solar panels in an average home is between $20,000 and $25,000.
"This is a little different because you aren't making an upfront investment," Jim Boyd said. "Every month, you're making a payment, but you're also saving more than your payment in electricity cost. You don't have to put money out and wait for it to come back."
The monthly payment will cover maintenance costs, said Lesley Beatty, director of marketing for SunRun. She said the total amount is lower than what homeowners would otherwise pay in electricity bills for 20 years. Beatty said the solar systems in each house are expected to generate 2.5 kilowatts of power.
"If you translate this power into pounds of CO2 (carbon dioxide) saved, all 90 homes would save about 4 million pounds of CO2 over the 20 years of the agreement," she said. "This is equivalent to taking about 500 cars off the road."
When the contract expires, homeowners may choose from three options: buy the system at whatever the fair market value is in 20 years; renew the contract with SunRun; or have the panels removed, Beatty said. SunRun will receive a 30 percent federal tax credit for purchasing the solar panels. Fremont-based PetersenDean will install the solar panels during the last stage of construction, which began in May.
Jim Boyd said Toll Brothers is hoping to finish construction of all 90 homes in two or three years. The first model home is expected to be done in September. Sixteen have already been sold.
"What our buyers will find with this solar panel initiative is that winter months' energy bills are going to be very, very low," he said, adding that having solar panels would be more cost-effective for people who use air conditioning often during the summer.
A total of 124 homes in Yorba Linda have gone solar since 2007, according to data from the California Solar Initiative. SunRun ranked Yorba Linda third among Orange County cities based on the number of solar homes added from January to May 2010. Santa Ana and Huntington Beach ranked first and second, respectively.

Summing up the 2009 Educational Year with PetersenDean
PetersenDean’s involvement in education comes in various venues. “We are ready to be involved with the community either by volunteering PetersenDean personnel to lead a class and donate materials so students can practice hands-on (MVROP), creating real jobs for displaced employees and graduating students (WIA-OJT), donating computing equipment (MSJE), scholarships (NMHS), or just a bit of fun, concert tickets for teachers (TFT).” says PetersenDean CEO, Jim Petersen.
MVROP, PetersenDean Provides Lectures and Jobs for Newark’s Mission Valley Regional Occupational Program

Newark, June 29, 2010. As reported in MVROP’s Reflections Newsletter Spring 2010: “PetersenDean, Inc. has fully immersed itself as a Green Initiative Business Partner by working with MVROP to create appropriate curriculum for the Solar Education component of the Construction Technology Program. They also donated over 200 hours of industry instruction and expertise within the classroom over a thirteen-week period during the spring 2010 semester. The instruction and training by various high-level PetersenDean, Inc. Directors, VP’s, and trainers has been a pivotal piece of this newly piloted part of the Construction Technology Program. After the success of this semester’s instruction and training, the Solar Education portion of the Construction Technology Program will be offered in the 2010-2011 school year.”
The Fremont MVROP Governing Council recognized PetersenDean on June 24, 2010 for their significant contribution of materials, personnel, for creating inspiration, and providing real jobs for up to 10 graduating students.
WIA-OJT Program Ohlone One Stop
Newark, May 4, 2010. An act of congress created the Workforce Investment Act program to provide Federal dollars to employers who hire those who have lost jobs due to a troubled economy. PetersenDean and Ohlone One Stop signed a Master Agreement to collaborate on May 4, 2010 and as a result, PetersenDean conducted over 20 interviews of displaced NUMMI employees, offering jobs to three candidates. The positions include CAD Drafter, Scheduling Project Manager, and Solar Sales Manager. Jim Petersen, CEO of PetersenDean, feels that “viable, local companies have a responsibility to try and bring displaced employees into our businesses; to give someone displaced for no fault of their own a chance to transfer their skills in a new line of business. Federal dollars help employers like PetersenDean during the on-the-job training process; an incentive even if it doesn’t cover the cost of the whole process.” Interviews and employment opportunities will continue within PetersenDean Solar teams.
MSJE, Mission San Jose Elementary School
Fremont, November 2009. PetersenDean donated four Dell desktop computers and five flat panel monitors to Mission San Jose Elementary School computer lab when hearing of a need for updated computers. Says Jim Petersen, CEO of PetersenDean, I strongly believe in supporting local schools, “it makes me feel good to know students race to use the newer machines because they are faster and modern looking and, according to students ‘make us feel good because they look brand new’.”
NMHS, PetersenDean offers Two Scholarships to Newark Memorial High School
When approached to support graduating seniors, Jim Petersen, CEO of PetersenDean jumped to meet the challenge by offering two scholarships to graduating seniors. The first and second place winners receive a $1,000 and $500 prize, respectively. Seven students entered the competition by writing a 2-page paper on the environment, recycling and green technology, and a one-page essay about themselves. In addition, students must have a grade point average of 3.0 or higher to compete for the scholarships. According to R. Petersen, evaluator, “trying to decide on the winners was one of the most difficult decisions I’ve had to make. These students really need the boost of a scholarship and have written great papers. I am grateful to Jim for offering this type of incentive to students struggling to make ends meet while trying to get an education”.
TFT, PetersenDean creates a Tickets For Teachers Program
Newark, June 2010. PetersenDean awarded concert tickets to two lucky teachers from Fremont Unified School District, Mission San Jose Elementary School. The teachers will attend a concert performed by The Bare Naked Ladies, part of the Wente Brothers Concert Series summer lineup. “Jim Petersen, CEO of PetersenDean, is a firm believer in demonstrating gratitude to teachers, especially in these tough times, and he is ready to put his money where his belief is. Jim steered the tickets, meant for PetersenDean valued customers, to the teachers and their partners who will enjoy premium seating, a sumptuous dinner, and Wente wines,” reports R. Petersen, Director of Educational Outreach for PetersenDean. “It was so nice to see the teacher’s smiles and to see how excited they were to receive their ticket packets.”
PetersenDean Set to Re-Construct Thousands of Storm Damaged Roofs in Oklahoma
June 9, 2010
Oklahoma City: PetersenDean, the nation’s largest privately held roofing and solar energy company, announced today that it plans to rebuild thousands of roofs in Oklahoma that were damaged as a result of recent storms there.
The state was recently ravaged by storms and winds so strong that entire roofs were blown off. The buildings affected were widespread and include homes, schools, shopping malls and other structures.
Early estimates have suggested that there may be as many as one-hundred thousand damaged roofs in the area where the storms passed through and the need to mobilize manpower, equipment and materials quickly is of the utmost importance.
“PetersenDean has serviced Oklahoma for years and with our manpower and financial strength we are able to respond very quickly to address the needs of insurance companies as well as building owners”, said Jim Petersen of PetersenDean.
Petersen-Dean also designs and builds high quality solar energy systems and has put the infrastructure in place to offer solar energy in that part of the country as well.
Founded in 1984, Petersen-Dean is a national firm and has constructed over one-million new roofs and solar energy systems throughout the United States and was awarded “Contractor of the Year” in 2009 by Roofing Contractor Magazine.

PetersenDean, the nation’s largest privately held roofing and solar company is providing a free, custom-made lecture series with 2-3 subject matter experts and roofing/solar materials needed for hands-on practice by students. Says Jim Petersen, Founder of PetersenDean, “I know how valuable it is to a student learning the building trade to handle materials used in today’s industry and to be mentored by Subject Matter Experts in the proper handling and application of those materials, this is our way of helping schools provide the best experience for students”.
About the program
PetersenDean’s 13-week educational program covers Safety, Basic Roofing for Commercial and Residential buildings, Basic PV Solar including rails/racks, panel installation, inverters and Basic Solar Connect. Students handle state of the art product and practice installation techniques under the guidance of PetersenDean Subject Matter Experts. “Because PetersenDean is both a roofing and solar company, we are able to introduce the importance of protecting the integrity of a roof while installing solar panels. We demonstrate the entire process of roofing to solar installation. Through extensive lectures and hands-on experience, students know we demand quality in everything we do”, says Ron Vincent of the PetersenDean Lecture Team. The Lecture series is custom made to match the MVROP curriculum in Building Trades Construction Technology 1&2, a certificate program for high school and adult students.
PetersenDean Investment
PetersenDean’s donation of personnel and materials for three classes per lecture day is significant. “From a budget perspective, I believe this to be the biggest donation of human resources and roofing and solar product by a privately held company in the history of MVROP”, says Rosemary Petersen, Director of Educational Outreach for PetersenDean.
Real Opportunities for Real Jobs
After completing the 2-year MVROP course and enhanced hands-on training, all graduates are job ready. In addition, immediately upon graduation, a select group of up to 10 students, 18 years and older, will begin on-the-job training in full time employment with PetersenDean.

PetersenDean launches training initiative in Miami for building safer roofs in Haiti
Petersen Dean Roofing and Solar Systems, Inc. teams up with Innovation Milestones 4 Life (im4Life) to train Haitian Americans in the roofing trade, January 28, 2010 Miami, FL (PRWEB)
January 25, 2010 – during this slow economy for many, Petersen Dean sees there is work to be done in the Haitian community. “We want to make a difference that is lasting for the Haitian community,” states Dave Wikel, Vice-President of Petersen Dean “and what better way than by creating trained roofers through the H.A.I.T.I. project.” The Haitian American Impact Training Initiative (HAITI) project will partner with a local church in the Miami Haitian community in providing 40-hours (plus) in an education and training program designed to teach the roofing trade. Petersen Dean will provide all the instruction to pre-qualified trainees. The program will be administered by Dr. Joshua Kirven who created the im4Life program.
“The HAITI project offers an excellent opportunity to show immediate community impact and improve morale during this difficult time,” says Kirven.
For the next several years the country of Haiti will need help to rebuild its infrastructure from the ground up. Roofing is just one part of it. U.S. contractors can play a key role in rebuilding a stronger Haiti by providing their expertise in training Haitian Americans to go back to their native country and make a difference. Yvel Paul, a native Haitian minister, who lost many family and friends in Port-au-Prince, proclaims “the HAITI project will give us the basic tools to find work in the states but most of all train my fellow Haitians on how to rebuild our home, even better.” Petersen Dean is the first contractor to step up but definitely won’t be the last as Haiti builds a stronger, safer nation.
